Mac's 1st Ocean Experience

We had dinner last night at the beach, and it was getting a little late. Mac was a bit squirmy at the table, so he and I left to go explore. About a block away from our restaurant was the Atlantic Ocean. So, I thought we would check it out. I was really excited to see what his reaction would be when he saw it. I wasn't disappointed. As we walked down the boardwalk toward the beach, and the ocean came into view, I heard him say, "ooh Mommy, sand castles." It was the purest form of amazement. I felt so fortunate to be able to experience it with him. Then...he felt the sand, and it was ON!!! He started digging and throwing sand everywhere.

I asked him if he wanted to go down to the ocean, and there was a resounding "NO." He wasn't quite ready to approach the crashing waves. In my mind, I was thinking, "maybe tomorrow." When it was time to go home, he defiantly picked up a handful of sand and marched back up the boardwalk. Aunt Holly asked what was in his hands and he replied, "a sand castle." Like, duh! Of course it is a sand castle. :)

Today, we headed back to the beach to REALLY build a sand castle. The skies were blue with big, white, puffy clouds. There was a steady breeze. And, once again, Mac was excited to be at the ocean. This time, he was braver. He actually walked all the way down to the water and got his feet wet. He loved the seagulls, the sand, and the sun.

As I watched him digging in the sand, I couldn't help but think about how much he loved the sandbox at Kelly's house (his teacher.) I told him, this is just like Kelly's sandbox, just much, much bigger! I think the mention of Kelly made him think about school and his friends. I think that, because out of the blue, he sat in the sand and said, "It's Circle Time, Mommy." Circle Time is an educational time at Kelly's house. So I took the opportunity and we went over our shapes by drawing them in the sand.

Today was Eli's first experience at the beach. I was the "protective mother" and kept him pretty sheltered from the sun, as you can see below.

His day wasn't as "exciting" as Mac's, but he was very alert and loved his day at the beach. He didn't sleep a wink for the entire 3 hours we were there. No tears either!!!

All in all, it was a great day!

Emily - you have such a way with words. It's like hearing you talk. I guess that's what blogging is all about. I feel like I'm with you and the boys and I know all is well:) I was delighted to hear Mac's voice today on the phone, too. We'll get that web cam going. Mac might not enjoy sitting at the computer talking to me as much as he enjoys Tux Paint and Horton - unless of course I make tooting sounds. Thanks for the updates. Looking forward to your entries.

P.S. - to other readers; wondering about that name, Ghi Ghi? That's that name I grabbed for my "grandma name" because Mac could say it. Then Emily and I didn't know how to spell it. It's a hard "g" sound followed by long "e". Any other suggestions? I think it looks goofy.
